How to create high speed conection

Creating a high-speed connection is similar to connecting a modem. There are, however, a few additional complications. Ask your ISP which of the following configurations is appropriate for your connection.

DHCP

You may be required to configure your sytem to obtain an IP address through DHCP. To configure this type of connection, start the Internet Configuration Wizard, select Ethernet Connection, and select DHCP from the Configure Network Settings screen. Some DSL providers and most cable modem providers use this configuration.
PPPoE

Alternatively, some DSL providers require your system to use a PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) connection. To configure this type of connection, start the Internet Configuration Wizard, select xDSL Connection, and follow the steps in the wizard. If you must supply a username and password to connect, you are probably using PPPoE.

Wireless Network Security

Networks have quickly evolved from the traditional Ethernet cable setup, with wires tucked under runs and tacked to ceilings and walls, to mobile setups with your valuable and personal data being broadcast throughout your neighborhood.

In this day, it is essential to protect yourself from attackers and snoopers, This article will employ simple techniques that can instantly make your wireless setup more secure.

The SSID

A Linksys Router will have a default Service Set Identifier (SSID). Everyone knows this. So one of your first steps in securing your network should be to change this to something else.

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)

As a minimum, you should enable this on your router. WEP encrypts the data, making it harder for intruders to snag the information flying through the air. Having since been replaced by newer protocols--the latest being IEEE 802.11i standard (also known as WPA2)--WEP is the bare minimum you should use, and is widely supported by older hardware. WEP is always better than no protection at all, but realize this is a false security and anyone with hacking knowledge can quickly compromise it.

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)

WPA was created to replace WEP. It is a wireless protocol with enhanced authentication and encryption. WPA's strength is that it uses the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol, which creates new keys as the system is being used. This fixes the exploits found with WEP because hacks could be used to quickly crack the key it used. If given the option, always choose WPA over WEP. Unfortunately, not all devices support this newer protocol and WEP must be settled for.

MAC Addresses

You can make your network static by physically inputting the MAC addresses of your hardware into the router table. This allows only those particular pieces of hardware to access the network. Since no two network devices share the same MAC address, this is a great way to secure your home network.

Disable DHCP

Simply put, don't allow your router to handout an IP address to anyone walking down the street with a laptop and a wireless card. You will need to physically assign each machine an IP address within the IP range you specify in the router.

By taking a moment to enable a few security protocols within your wireless network, you could prevent a hacker or snoop from gaining access to your valuable information.

How to Disable the Insert Key in Windows

Almost anyone who has used a wordprocessor has accidentally hit the Insert key and overwritten when they thought they were editing. This article describes a simple way to disable the Insert key on your keyboard.

Whenever you press a key, a windows message is created, which contains a key code that uniquely identifies the key pressed. Programmes (like Microsoft Word) look for keypress messages and take actions based on the key code in the message. By mapping the insert key press event to null, windows send a message containing null for the key code when the Insert key is pressed. Programmes receiving the message, therefore, do not perform the action associated with an insert key press event, freeing you from having to worry about overwriting things again.

Make sure you read the warnings section before you continue.

Step:

  1. Go to Start → Run → regedit
  2. Go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
  3. Right-click on the right half of the screen and choose New → Binary Value
  4. Name the new Value Scancode Map
  5. Enter 000000000000000002000000000052E000000000
  6. Close regedit
  7. Reboot.
  8. Optional: you can take off the key of your keyboard and replace it when done.
Tips:
  • Remember to update the numberof keymap fields if you disable or map more keys.
  • Delete the value HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout\Scancode Map if you mess it up. Reboot and start over.
  • If you are using a non-standard keyboard (including laptop keyboards) look up the key scan codes, as they may be different.
Warings:
  • You must be computer literate to try this. If you mess this up, your keyboard will misbehave.
  • You should back up your data before making changes to the registry.
  • You will need to reboot for the changes to take effect.
  • You must have administrator privilages to do this.
  • Do not confuse HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout with HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layouts (notice the plural).
  • This affects all users on the computer. It cannot be applied on a per-user basis. Since the settings are stored in the registry, you can't change this behaviour by changing the keyboard.
  • If using the second method, be sure the key can be put back afterward.

A Smile Can Make You Younger

SMILE! The Ultimate Guide to Achieving Smile Beauty by Jonathan B. LevineSmiles are also associated with youth. So why do so many people attempt to forestall the aging process by suffering through face-lifts, chemical peels, and microliposuction when an aesthetic dentist can fix an aging smile?

Doing nothing more than readjusting what's inside your mouth can take ten years off your face.

As we age, our teeth shorten, creating dark silhouettes, which are referred to as negative space. By lengthening those teeth, they become visible again when you're speaking and even when your lips are in a relaxed smile position. This regained tooth exposure translates to a more youthful face overall. Another consequence of aging teeth is yellowing. An in-office whitening treatment and/or the right over-the-counter whitener can restore that youthful whiteness. New technology has made these kinds of problems very easy to fix, and many of my patients have forgone the knife, laser, and needle in favor of changing their smile.

The mystery of black holes

In 1916, the German astronomer Schwarzschild, with the support of Einstein's works, calculated the size of a star whose escape velocity would be equal to the speed of light .

This speed is an absolute limit, and according to relativity, nothing can go faster.

What's more, we know that the size of a neutron star decreases when its mass increases, because gravity becomes stronger than the degeneracy pressure.
If the mass of such a star increases, there comes a time, called the Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit, when the escape velocity becomes equal to the speed of light, and nothing will be able to escape the star.

Let us notice that the cohesion of a neutron star is also depending of the strong nuclear interaction. As the behaviour of this interaction is poorly understood under a high gravity, the Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit is not precisely known. It is contained between 1.5 and 3 solar masses.

mass-radius relationship

On this graph, you can see that the size of a black hole horizon (the Schwarzschild radius) is equal to a neutron star size when its mass is about 2.5 Solar masses (this mass is called the Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit).
Notice that, for a white dwarf or a neutron star, the size decreases when the mass increases !

If nothing, not even light, can't escape, this star becomes invisible : Such an object is called a black hole.
The black hole has no material surface ; the original matter of the star is shrunk to an infinitely dense point, called a singularity.
The "surface" of the black hole is called the horizon, its size is called 'Schwarzschild radius'.

If G is the gravitational constant and M the mass of a body whose radius is R, the escape velocity is -.
In the case of a black hole, this velocity is equal to c the speed of light,
hence the Schwarzschild radius of a black hole is expressed as -

Everything which could happen beyond the horizon is trapped, and can only increase the mass of the black hole.

Contraty to Hollywood movies, a black hole is not a "cosmic vacuum cleaner" : it can only catch objects which come very near. If we replaced the Sun with a black hole, we couldn't notice the difference (at least in terms of gravity, we would miss the heat !)

We can view two scenarios to explain the creation of a black hole :

  • a neutron star is part of a binary system, and its mass increases by the pulling of the matter of the other star - accretion disk phenomenon, like a nova.
  • the collapse of a hypernova leads to the direct formation of a black hole.

Free up disk space

By freeing disk space, you can improve the performance of your computer. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.
Use Disk Cleanup to:

•

Remove temporary Internet files.

•

Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).

•

Empty the Recycle Bin.

•

Remove Windows temporary files.

•

Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.

•

Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.

To use Disk Cleanup

1.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.

Image of Disk Cleanup dialog box

2.

In the Disk Cleanup for dialog box, scroll through the content of the Files to delete list.

Image of Disk Cleanup for dialog box

Choose the files that you want to delete.

3.

Clear the check boxes for files that you don't want to delete, and then click OK.

4.

When prompted to confirm that you want to delete the specified files, click Yes.

After a few minutes, the process completes and the Disk Cleanup dialog box closes, leaving your computer cleaner and performing better.

Speed up access to data

Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. The response time can be significantly longer.

Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.

When to run Disk Defragmenter
In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals—monthly is optimal—there are other times you should run it too, such as when:

•

You add a large number of files.

•

Your free disk space totals 15 percent or less.

•

You install new programs or a new version of Windows.

To use Disk Defragmenter:

1.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.

Image of the Disk Defragmenter dialog box

Click Analyze to start the Disk Defragmenter.

2.

In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, click the drives that you want to defragment, and then click the Analyze button. After the disk is analyzed, a dialog box appears, letting you know whether you should defragment the analyzed drives.

Tip: You should analyze a volume before defragmenting it to get an estimate of how long the defragmentation process will take.

3.

To defragment the selected drive or drives, click the Defragment button. Note: In Windows Vista, there is no graphical user interface to demonstrate the progress—but your hard drive is still being defragmented.

After the defragmentation is complete, Disk Defragmenter displays the results.

4.

To display detailed information about the defragmented disk or partition, click View Report.

5.

To close the View Report dialog box, click Close.

6.

To close the Disk Defragmenter utility, click the Close button on the title bar of the window.

Detect and repair disk errors

In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.

As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult, or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors, and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.

If you use your computer daily, you should run this utility once a week to help prevent data loss.

To run the Error Checking utility:

1.

Close all open files.

2.

Click Start, and then click My Computer.

3.

In the My Computer window, right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties.

4.

In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.

5.

Click the Check Now button.

6.

In the Check Disk dialog box, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.

Image of Check Disk dialog box

7.

If bad sectors are found, choose to fix them.

Tip: Only select the "Automatically fix file system errors" check box if you think that your disk contains bad sectors.

Protect your computer against spyware

Spyware collects personal information without letting you know and without asking for permission. From the Web sites you visit to usernames and passwords, spyware can put you and your confidential information at risk. In addition to privacy concerns, spyware can hamper your computer's performance. To combat spyware, you might want to consider using Microsoft Windows Defender, which is included in Windows Vista, and is available as a free download for Microsoft XP SP2. Alternatively, there are other free anti-spyware software programs available.

Learn all about ReadyBoost

If you're using Windows Vista, you can use ReadyBoost to speed up your system. A new concept in adding memory to a system, it allows you to use non-volatile flash memory—like a USB flash drive or a memory card—to improve performance without having to add additional memory. Learn more.
